The critically acclaimed survival horror did receive praise for its character design and its choice of integrating the gameplay mechanics into Isaac's suit. The designer talked about how they designed the spine part of the RIG, saying that "the idea of having the HUD on Isaac's back came soon after from the team, and the spine then went through dramatic changes to implement that HUD afterwards."
Lao also touched on the smart design choice of implementing the HUD idea on the suit's back. And according to his experience during the process, there was a wide array of suit designs varying from "very slim-fitted to very bulky, some very robotic looking." In fact, some of his sketches depicted the troubled engineer in a suit that carried a giant sword as well. "My suit designs were all over the place," says Lao. Apparently, the hit anime Neon Genesis Evangelion was also a great source of inspiration during the design stage. Based on his comments, the artist had many inspirations before the final version of the suit was decided upon.
